Time Capule: The all-in-one networking device that is versatile

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

What’s better than an all-in-one printer?  How about the new Time Capsule.  You’re probably familiar with Leopard’s Time Machine.  But, the Time Machine only works with specifically with Mac’s Leopard operating system and not Tiger or any Windows computers.  There is now one device that will allow easy backups for Macs and PCs.

This device is wireless on the N series.  So, you can perform backups wirelessly.  Guess what?  It’s also a wireless router.  And a wireless or USB external hard drive (either 500GB or 1TB).  And a print server.  And probably a microwave if you look hard enough.  Okay, maybe not a microwave.  But, it does just about everything else while still remaining compatibility with Apple and Microsoft.

At $299 for 500GB and $499 for 1TB, this device is a very vesatile, solid networking solution for a group of computers.

Microsoft bought Yahoo!

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

It’s finally official: Microsoft bought Yahoo! for 47.2 billion!

Microsoft will now be able to compete on an advertising level with Google.  Specifically, Microsoft will be able to leverage the Yahoo website to gain revenues from online advertisers.  Yahoo currently competes with Google Adwords for pay-per-click advertising.  Guess who will now capitalize on all of the revenues on the clicks?  That’s right - good ol’ Microsoft.

In turn, Yahoo will be able to compete with Google on more of a larger, robust scale with Microsoft as a niche software developer giant.

One big note:  Microsoft is planning to convert its MSN e-mails users to Yahoo accounts.  No indication has been made as to when, but it sounds like Microsoft is looking to further brand itself with Yahoo by showcasing Yahoo emails instead of MSN.

Beware of the April Fool’s Worm

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

The April Fool’s Worm is in full effect, and you should be on the look-out.  Any email with the subject related to “April Fool’s Day” should be treated with care.  In other words, delete any e-mails with such a subject.

This worm is a remnant of the Storm Worm that was active during Valentine’s Day.  Once the worm is downloaded, it opens up firewall filters to attempt to make calls via ports.

This worm and other may worms may be defended against by having active anti-spyware
