Wow, this is a new concept that I thought right when I saw it, “Yeah, why didn’t I think of that?” A power outlet with USB ports! This is the actual wall outlet that comes with the 2 3-prong power slots for power cords but with the added 2 USB ports in the middle of the power slots. Very cool. Yes, you should be using a power strip that will ground and prevent surges to your computer support devices. But, let’s face it, you don’t always have this foresight and sometimes, or more than you’d like, will just directly plug your computer, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, or other devices right into the wall outlet.
Now, you can be more efficient with your devices by just plugging in your iPhone, iPad, or phone into the USB port connector with your phone power cord. This is instead of connecting it to your laptop or desktop. Or it’s instead of using the coveted power outlet with your phone power cord. Then, you can free up the 2 power outlets for your alarm clock in your bedroom or toaster in the kitchen, or any another device while using the 2 USB ports for your computer gadgets.
Best of all, you can do it yourself. Here’s the tech setup:
- Find your circuit breaker and turn of the circuit for the room of your outlet.
- Grab a flat head screwdriver and remove the 2 screws of the existing wall outlet plate.
- Keep an eye on which wires, usually 4, are attached to the back of the old power outlet plate
- Install the new wall outlet with USB ports by reconnecting the inside wiring and securing the 2 screws.
- Turn on the circuit and plug in your USB and power devices.
This product lists for $30, but could be found for less through Amazon and other retail IT service shops. The cool factor here is that the USB port powers up only the required output per device, preventing USB surges. Plus, the best part of all is you get to de-clutter your outlet area with just straight power cables versus bulky power adapters.
