Is your laptop lagging behind in the wireless speed department?  The websites you’re accessing are getting slower than you’re used to? 

The wi-fi card in your laptop is not readily accessible, but many times, it’s just as easy to get to as your RAM memory module.  There are a few IT steps to take first to see if you’re able to upgrade your laptop wi-fi card to a higher speed.  This higher speed will allow you to access the Internet faster.

Here’s how to determine if your laptop can have an upgraded Wi-Fi card:

1. Go on your manufacturer’s website, i.e. Dell support, Lenovo support, and see if there’s an upgraded Wi-Fi card that’s available for your laptop.
2. Buy the Wi-Fi card.
3. Ensure your laptop is on a table and your feet are not on carpet to guard against electrostatic shock.
4. Turn the laptop over and open up the smallest compartments.
5. Carefully remove the antenna and swap in the new Wi-Fi card.

Of course, not all laptops are as easy to upgrade the Wi-Fi cards.  In those cases, you can just buy a USB Wi-Fi card at the highest speed and stick it in.  That’s sounds easy enough, but some folks don’t like anything sticking out of their laptops and having them look nice and neat.  In those cases, you should install the upgraded Wi-Fi card.
