Google hope that the third time is a charm with its 3rd generation TV media device, Chromecast. The Google support folks hopes this will if not beat out Roku and Apple TV products, that it will at least grab a chunk of the trending Internet on TV market.
Cost: Only $35 versus the $50 Roku and $99 Apple TV. Okay, so Apple support has always bumped up its prices. Hey, reputation is everything. Roku actually properly prices its product.
What’s different about Chromecast? It just works. There is zero setup time. Also, all devices may use it with your TV. While others are streaming online shows to their TVs, the Google service is going a step above to also allow users to stream the TV to their computers.
How does it work? Chromecast uses Chrome OS. Connect it via HDMI or USB to your TV. Then, pull up your favorite Youtube video from your phone, tablet, or computer. Then, show it on your TV. Netflix and other apps will be available soon. It streams the content from the cloud versus your device. That way, the resolution is the best possible.
Should you buy one? I really don’t think so. It is a glorified remote control. Plus, if you have Smart TV or can see the Internet on your TV now, then you’ve accomplished what Chromecast can do and more. I’m actually disappointed that the Google techs couldn’t come up with something more advanced than this. Do not buy this one!
