There are viruses, and then there are VIRUSES. The ransomware virus that is out and about is the mother of all viruses. Even if you get the best of the best virus removal specialists, a.k.a. New York Computer Help (yes, a shameless plug), you are most likely still without any weapons.
Let’s rule one thing out of the way. I’m not talking about the FBI virus that we eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks throughout each and every day. This is a virus that goes a step above and actually encrypts the files so that you cannot open the files.
How does it work? The criminal creating this overall virus will use a kiddie porn, child porn, or other ransomware-type virus as the cover, or portal to get into your computer. Once the perpetrator is inside your computer, he will create a encrypted code, known as the birele file encryption, so that all files or files with a certain extension will have a password or key on them. The files will now bear a “.crypt” extension instead of the normal .docx, .xls, and so on. This key will not be able to be solved on the computer since the key will be held on the criminal’s server. So, the key will need to be decrypted first on the server and then used for accessing the files. That means that only the criminal will be able to provide the answer.
If you’re one of the unlucky victims here, hopefully you have a good file backup. If not, you have to ask yourself if your files are important to you. If they are, the perp will have most likely flashed on your screen how to get your files and how much they will cost for you to get them. Now, I know what you’re thinking. They’ll just take your money and run. But, they actually are looking to gain your business and want to keep a positive reputation so that future prospects will go ahead and buy as well. We had a company who enlisted us to recover their files from the encrypted ransomware virus. We were able to send a few sample encrypted files first to the criminal who sent them back opened and clean. Then, the company was asked to fork up $5,000 via Bitcoin. Finally, the files were provided right away.
Keep in mind to not pay right away. Remove the virus first. Hopefully, you just have a lower level type of virus infection that is just the FBI virus or something else. And just hope and pray that your files are not encrypted after. If they are, you are forced to pay. It could be anywhere from $300 – $10,000 depending how valuable your files are accessed at. Currently, there is no computer fix to solve this nasty encryption and of course these guys are just too swift and smart for the Internet police.
