Should I buy the C.H.I.P.? – Better than Raspberry Pi Zero? In other words, should you buy a $9 computer?

CHIP vs Raspberry PiYummy, Raspberry Pie.  Nope, drop the e in Pie and you have a computer, not a scrumptious dessert.  The 2 wow factors here are the price and the size.  Low and tiny.  Now, Next Thing Co. has a new computer service device, a competitor to Raspberry Pi, that is called C.H.I.P.

The Raspberry Pi Zero is just $5.  The C.H.I.P is a hefty $9 and worth the extra $4. Now, before you go buying tons of them and bragging about having tons of them, let’s go over the specs.

Here are the C.H.I.P specs:

  • WiFi B/GNC.H.I.P. computer review
  • 1GHz processor
  • 4GB hard drive built-in storage
  • 512MB RAM
  • 1 USB port
  • 1 Mini USB port
  • Bluetooth 4.0

The C.H.I.P trumps the Raspberry Pi by having WiFi, Bluetooth and 4GB onboard storage which are all lacking with he Pi Zero model.

This desktop is great for setting up a computer to your TV or big monitor to access the Internet easily. It’s also great for testing out new operating systems, using old operating systems, and really just having another spare computer to have around.  Remember, you’ll need to plug in an external drive if you want to download files since there is only 4GB of storage internally.  Otherwise, it’s a win-win and you cannot lose with forking over $9 for a new computer!  You can check out the Thing Co. website for ordering info.
