Can I upgrade the SSD on my MacBook Pro with Touch Bar?

picture of inside of macbook pro with touch barWant to upgrade the solid state drive (SSD) on your MacBook Pro with Touch Bar?  Think again!  Nope.  Can’t do it!

Why can’t you do it?  The SSD is surface mounted to the logic board which means you cannot remove it.  So, this SSD is deemed non-removable.  You can’t pry it off, desolder it, or remove it any other way.

This static SSD mount is a shame since this means you can’t save a few bucks by upgrading the solid state drive later. So, you’ll have to learn to live with a 256GB or 512GB storage drive.  Well, I guess Apple support is really pushing for all Mac users to live with the cloud.  If you have lots of pics, videos or music, don’t think about crowding up your drive.  You should really change your IT support strategy to go more online.  Or you may be running the risk of reaching your hard drive capacity which won’t be good.

So, if you buy the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, you should really splurge and buy the biggest capacity drive, 512GB, so you’re in good shape going forward with a decent amount of space.
