How to change your computer name in Windows 7 or Windows Vista – nyc PC repair help

Buying a new computer is great.  Finding out the computer has a strange name to it is not so great. That’s what happens when you buy a new computer.  The Dell support team or IBM tech guys will label each computer in geek-speak, or a way that they can keep track of you.  There’s nothing entirely wrong with this from a computer support aspect, but from a personalization perspective, it’s not so good.  Do you really want to call your computer: AFGWEEB or DELL482dg?

You can easily change your computer name. You just need to know what steps to follow.  Don’t worry, you don’t have to be Bill Gates or a PC expert to follow these steps.

Here’s how to change your computer name in Windows 7 or Windows Vista:

  1. Click Start (Windows icon) on bottom of screen->right-click Computer->left-click Advanced System Settings
  2. In System Properties box, click Change
  3. Type in the name you’d like, click OK, and then you’ll be prompted to reboot to save the changes.

What’s nice about this is that if you have an office network or home office, you can identify your computers how you’d like, i.e. front desk computer, back office computer, accounting computer, etc.
