Everyone wants to be a geek, a tech, a guy who can fix your own computer. You know, a do-it-yourself’er, a.k.a. diy’er. What will happen if your computer crashes or has a computer issue? Will you step up to the plate and enter your own inner geekdom to get the job done?
Now, you don’t have to be Bill Gates or fix your own computer issue. With the right utilities, you can be the envy of your friends and family, becoming the go-to tech guy.
Here are 3 easy steps to fix your computer:
- Run a virus scan. If you don’t have anti-virus software, install a free version of Avast anti-virus software and run a full scan. Your slow computer or a computer causing errors and freezes could be the result of a virus or spyware. Get rid of them now.
- Keep it simple stupid. This KISS acronym is more powerful than you may think and has been known to solve many computer issues. Unplug all peripherals including: USB hard drives, iPods, iPads, printers, scanners, and anything else besides your mouse, monitor, and keyboard. If you have a laptop, unplug everything. Restart and see if you’re good to go.
- Back-up and Reinstall. Maybe not a quick fix, but still thorough. Copy your files to an external drive or online and grab an operating system DVD to reinstall from scratch. If you don’t have a disk, then research online how to perform a system restore with your computer model. There usually is a built-in option on your computer to do so.
If you’re still having issues with your computer or these 3 steps do not work, then you probably should take it in for a free computer diagnostic with a local tech shop to see what the issue and cost is to determine if should pay for it. And don’t worry if you have to seek help, we will still consider your tech chops admirable enough to take it to the next level.
