Upgrading the Storage for a Playstation 5 (PS5)

Upgrading the storage on a Playstation 5 (PS5) is a great way to expand your storage capacity and improve loading times for your games. Here’s what you’ll need to know:

Before you start:

  • Make sure you have a compatible M.2 NVMe SSD. Sony has a list of compatible SSDs on their website.
  • You’ll also need a Phillips #1 screwdriver.

Steps to upgrade your PS5 storage:

  1. Turn off your PS5 and unplug it from the power outlet.
  2. Place your PS5 on a flat, stable surface.
  3. Locate the expansion bay cover on the back of the console. It’s the small, rectangular panel on the bottom right side.
  4. Use a Phillips #1 screwdriver to remove the screw from the expansion bay cover.
  5. Pull the expansion bay cover straight off.
  6. Locate the M.2 SSD slot inside the expansion bay.
  7. Carefully insert the M.2 SSD into the slot, making sure it’s aligned correctly.
  8. Use the included screws to secure the M.2 SSD in place.
  9. Put the expansion bay cover back on and tighten the screw.
  10. Plug your PS5 back in and turn it on.

Once your PS5 has booted up, you’ll need to format the new SSD.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Storage.
  2. Select the new M.2 SSD.
  3. Select “Format as extended storage.”

Your PS5 will now format the SSD and make it ready for use.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • You can only use one M.2 SSD at a time with your PS5.
  • The maximum capacity for an M.2 SSD on PS5 is 4TB.
  • You can move games and apps between your PS5’s internal storage and the M.2 SSD.
  • Upgrading your PS5’s storage will not void your warranty.
